Outside the Serpentine Gallery in London, the annual architectural commission by artist Theaster Gates draws art lovers alongside devotees of architecture and design. Three young women step into the stark afternoon sunlight for a photograph. Above them, the oculus casts a circle of illumination — like a circus spotlight — transforming the wooden floor into a stage and the fleeting moment into performance.
