The Dark Storm
£575.00
Arriving before dawn, only the faintest glow illuminated the horizon. I carefully made my way down to the sandy beach below. It was September 2006, and I was standing on Coumeenoole Strand, at the wild western edge of the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland.
My camera of choice at the time was a beautiful Japanese-made 4"×5" wooden masterpiece — an Ebony. I spent some time watching the gentle waves roll in, waiting for the first light to emerge. With the camera set up and ready, I continued to wait.
The scene began to grow darker. Clouds drifted south-west overhead and rain started to fall. Taking a chance, I began a long exposure image, for a brief moment, the clouds cleared in the distance, revealing an extraordinary and unexpected scene. The resulting image holds a rare contradiction: warm yet dark, tranquil yet mysterious. A fleeting convergence of weather, light and timing — and a reminder of why landscape photography so often rewards patience.
