Later that day, temperatures would be officially recorded as the highest ever for May in the United Kingdom — another climatic milestone, another new record. There is something unexpectedly iconic about this image. It could have been made in Saint-Tropez on the Côte d’Azur, on a tropical island, or along some distant sun-drenched shoreline. Yet this is West Wittering, a place more commonly associated with the temperate rhythms of the English coast. The photograph carries a quiet ambiguity. Is this simply an exceptional day, or a glimpse of a changing future? As seasons shift and records continue to fall, scenes once considered foreign begin to feel increasingly familiar.
