The Hottest Day
£325.00
The Hottest Day - Early afternoon at low tide on England’s southern coast. A young woman returns from a dip in the sea, her silhouette framed against the shimmering light and vast expanse of water. Later that day, temperatures would be officially recorded as the highest ever for May in the United Kingdom — another climatic milestone, another new record. There is something unexpectedly iconic about this image. It could have been made in Saint-Tropez on the Côte d’Azur, on a tropical island, or along some distant sun-drenched shoreline. Yet this is West Wittering, a place more commonly associated with the temperate rhythms of the English coast. The photograph carries a quiet ambiguity. Is this simply an exceptional day, or a glimpse of a changing future? As seasons shift and records continue to fall, scenes once considered foreign begin to feel increasingly familiar. What might once have seemed Mediterranean now unfolds on the shores of southern England — perhaps a new normal for this part of the world.
