Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, France is an Abbey dating from the 9th Century. Built on a rock separated from the mainland by tidal waters it has served as an Abbey, a Monastery and also as a prison in more recent times. It is currently a Catholic church with both resident Nuns and Monks worshipping there.
