The Louvre in Paris embodies the interiors of many different eras, each contributing its own language of decoration, proportion and craftsmanship. While the styles can vary considerably, they somehow coexist within the vast fabric of the building.

This particular example, found in a quieter and less frequented part of one of the wings, is classically ornamented, with an almost Roman character in its symmetry, scale and decorative detail. Yet it is the condition of the interior that makes it especially compelling.

Somewhat unkempt and clearly showing the effects of neglect, the space has acquired a patina that feels entirely appropriate. The ageing surfaces, accumulated marks and absence of pristine restoration have softened the formality of the decoration. Rather than diminishing its beauty, time and neglect have enriched it — creating an atmosphere and sense of authenticity that immaculate restoration could never quite reproduce.
