On an upper floor of a chateau in the Loire Valley, there is a room full of taxidermy. It is a fitting inventory for a place like this. A country chateau is governed by its setting: the forest that feeds it, the river that gives it access. The wildlife that surrounds the house is the reason the house exists.

Here the animal is the protagonist. The body is cropped to its legs, held mid-stride, while its shadow stretches across the ground with its head lowered and its whiskers intact. The specimen is still, but the shadow moves, and the photograph is caught between the two. What was once hunted, fed on and collected has become a silhouette that outlives the animal, and the image lets it walk again.
