Step inside the Church of Saint-Gervais in Falaise, northern France. High on the wall of a side chapel, a painting stands bathed in soft, luminous afternoon light. The atmosphere is one of devotion and contemplation — a space where stillness feels instructive. Construction of the church began shortly after 1066, almost certainly under the orders of William the Conqueror (Guillaume le Conquérant), who was born in the town.
