J'adore Rouge

J’adore Rouge - A quietly enigmatic portrait of a young woman reclining in repose, suspended between the suggestion of sleep and something more final. The ambiguity is deliberate, inviting the viewer to question whether they are witnessing a moment of rest, surrender, or absence. Bathed in rich red tones, the image possesses a theatrical stillness that is both alluring and unsettling. The lineage of this work can be traced through art history. It begins with Dead Soldier, an anonymous painting that hangs in the The National Gallery. That work inspired Édouard Manet to create The Dead Toreador, which in turn resonates with the contemporary vision of Michael Borremans and his painting The Devil’s Dress. This photograph is my own interpretation of that artistic thread, drawing upon themes of stillness, mortality, beauty, and the enduring dialogue between past and present. Through the language of photography, it seeks not to replicate these works, but to continue the conversation they began.
