Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, is a remarkable abbey dating back to the 9th century. Built upon a rocky island cut off from the mainland by tidal waters, it has served over the centuries as an abbey, a monastery, and, more recently, a prison. Today it remains an active Catholic church, home to both resident nuns and monks who continue their worship there.
