Moonrise, The Witterings — Entre Chien et Loup

The moon rises above the horizon as twilight settles in and the tide slowly moves in. There is an unmistakable romantic quality to the scene, its warmth and familiarity inviting a quiet emotional response.

Only later, when examining the photograph more closely, did I notice a lone dog on the far right. In the failing light, I had missed it entirely.

Its unexpected presence brought to mind the French expression entre chien et loup — literally, between dog and wolf — a phrase describing the ambiguous light of dusk, when it becomes difficult to distinguish one from the other.
