The American Night III

£155.00

Quantity:

“The American Night” is the literal translation of La Nuit américaine, the French term for day for night: the filmmaking technique of simulating darkness while shooting in full daylight. Through heavy underexposure and carefully chosen tones, cinematographers conjure the illusion of moonlight. It is also the French title of Truffaut’s 1973 film Day for Night, a meditation on illusion, image-making and the fragile poetry of cinema itself.

This photograph borrows the trick. Made in daylight, it holds a sky withdrawn into black, while the sea below glitters with a light that seems to belong to another hour. The horizon becomes a threshold, calm yet faintly ominous, like the held breath before a scene begins. Less a document of place than a study of mood, the image lets light disguise itself, and the ordinary pass quietly into illusion.
