West Wittering is renowned for its extraordinary beach. Along this stretch of England’s southern coastline, a vast expanse of sand meets an unusually shallow shoreline. Even at low tide, it is possible to walk far out into the sea and remain only waist deep. As the tide recedes, it reveals intricate patterns in the rippled sand and shallow pools of water, creating a landscape that can resemble a wind-sculpted desert.

I arrive at dawn, with the tide at its lowest. It is August, the country is in the grip of a heatwave, and the sun is already bright and sharp beneath a cloudless sky. The receding tide has worked its magic, leaving behind a surface that appears at once completely random and strangely ordered. Shallow pools lie perfectly still, while the low morning sun casts long, dark shadows across the sand.

The resulting images feel almost otherworldly — fascinating, unfamiliar and quietly beautiful. For a brief moment, this familiar stretch of English coastline seems transformed into somewhere entirely unexpected.
