SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen
£75.00
The SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen - commissioned by Scandinavian Airlines System - is a truly iconic piece of architecture by renowned Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen. Opened in 1960, it was conceived as a multi-purpose facility: both a luxury hotel and an airline terminal, a concept that may seem unusual given that the airport lies over 8 km (5 miles) to the south. A dedicated shuttle bus once connected guests directly to the airport. Jacobsen not only designed the building’s striking modernist form - Copenhagen’s first skyscraper - but also crafted its interiors and furnishings, including now-iconic pieces like the Egg and Swan chairs. Today, this landmark lives on as the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel, a testament to mid-century Scandinavian design at its most ambitious and holistic.
