The Virgin Mary, bathed in glorious afternoon light, greets visitors inside the Church of Saint-Gervais in Falaise, northern France. Construction of the church began shortly after 1066, almost certainly under the orders of William the Conqueror (Guillaume le Conquérant), who was born in the town.
