Inside the Church of Saint-Gervais in Falaise, northern France, several side chapels line the right-hand aisle. The stone is a beauteous pale yellow — warm, clean, and aged - bathed in soft, luminous afternoon light. A wooden bench, the edge of a large frame, and little else are visible. The silence here is profound. Construction of the church began shortly after 1066, almost certainly under the orders of William the Conqueror (Guillaume le Conquérant), who was born in the town.
